Linked to the presence of boric acid: application to a mucous membrane or damaged skin increases the systemic passage of boric acid and, in children, may expose to toxic systemic effects. These effects are all the more to be feared when the topical is used for a prolonged or repeated period, on a large surface, under occlusion, on damaged skin (particularly burnt skin), on mucous membranes and in young children.
